Denmark's leading composer, Poul Ruders, has just completed his Piano Concerto No. 2, a 23 minute work in three movements. Composed for piano virtuoso Vassily Primakov, the composition was commissioned for Primakov by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, with whom Primakov will give the premiere performance in Oslo on October 20, 2010. The new work will be conducted by the orchestra's Music Director, Thomas Sondergard.
Primakov's new film, "Vassily Primakov plays Brahms, Chopin & Scriabin" was released on March 1 by Bridge Records on a new DVD. In celebration of Fryderyk Chopin's 200th birthday, the film includes Primakov's performances of Chopin's 4 Ballades. The DVD also includes the Brahms Op. 117 Intermezzos, and a hair-raising reading of Scriabin's Sonata No. 4.
The March issue of BBC Music Magazine features a review of Primakov's recent Schumann CD. Reviewer Misha Donat states: "Now just turned 30, Vassily Primakov was a major prize-winner at the Gina Bachauer International Competition, among others, and on the evidence of this new Schumann disc it's not hard to understand his success...this well-recorded Schumann recital is one that gives rare pleasure."
