Major Success in the Hamptons: Workshop & Concert at the Playhouse

Swiss Global’s most recent collaboration with the Playhouse Project was deemed a remarkable success by the overwhelming number of participants and appreciative audience. Each autumn for three years running, Foundation Artistic Director Geoffrey Simon leads a Workshop & Performance in East Hampton, NY, where musicians from the region are invited to participate in a two-day rehearsal period followed by an evening concert. Thanks to the enthusiasm of several local arts groups, including the Choral Society of the Hamptons and the Peconic Youth Orchestra, attendance this year was at a record high.

The Workshop Orchestra assembled for rehearsal on Friday, 22 October at the usual venue, namely the Playhouse on the South Fork of Long Island. Surprised and impressed by the sheer number of participating musicians, workshop administrators moved the Saturday rehearsal and concert to the nearby Great Hall of the Ross School. More than 140 people attended the concert!

The programme:

MozartLacrimosa, from Requiem
GriegHolberg Suite for String Orchestra
AmesLaudate Dominum, for Chorus, Piano, Violin Solo and String Orchestra

The final piece, a new work by Pulitzer Prize-nominee Roger Ames, was commissioned by the Playhouse Project. The Laudate is a tribute to Leonard Bernstein, whose contribution to music education and appreciation is remembered and honored by the Playhouse Project.
