Australian composer Barry Conyngham A.M. (Order of Australia), MA (Hons) Syd., DMus Melb., studied with Peter Sculthorpe and Toru Takemitsu.
He is Emeritus Professor of the University of Wollongong and Southern Cross University where he was Foundation Vice-Chancellor (1994-2000). He is also the first musician to hold the Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University (2000-2001).
With premieres and performances of his works in Japan, North and South America, Europe, the UK and Australia, Barry Conyngham has over seventy published works and over thirty recordings featuring his compositions.
He has been involved with a number of arts organisations including the World Music Council, Opera Australia, the Australia Council, the Australian Music Centre and the Swiss Global Artistic Foundation.
Recent first performances are Veils in Oslo and Copenhagen in 2003 and Dreams Go Wandering Still for orchestra at the Adelaide Festival in 2004. In the same year the Sydney Symphony Orchestra premiered Fix, his large work for baritone and orchestra, at the Sydney Opera House. The first performance of Now That Darkness was given by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in May 2005.
