Peter Tregear is a former lecturer in music at Fitzwilliam & Churchill Colleges, Cambridge and currently Dean of Trinity College, University of Melbourne.

He has worked extensively as a performer and academic in Europe and Australia, and currently serves on the advisory boards of Victoria Opera, Musica Viva Australia and the Swiss Global Artistic Foundation.

He was the author of a centenary history of the Faculty of Music, University of Melbourne, published in 1997, and his study of the composer Ernst Krenek will be published in 2007 by Scarecrow Press. The Australian Music Foundation awarded Peter Tregear the Sir Charles Mackerras Conducting Prize in 2003. Since then he has become a Trustee of the AMF.
