As part of its contininuing series of events commemorating British creative artists who lived in and are buried in Switzerland, and which has already celebrated the lives and work of James Mason, Richard Burton and Graham Greene, the Foundation will early in 2007 pay tribute to the elfin British actress Audrey Hepburn, whose home and grave are in the village of Tolochenaz, near Morges, on Lake Geneva.
The event will take the form of an illustrated talk on Audrey Hepburn’s remarkable career and her enduring appeal–the iconic black dress she wore in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s has just set a world record of £468,000 at a charity auction–followed by a celebration dinner near Tolochenaz, at which several local personalities who knew her personally will be in atttendance.
The Swiss-born cellist Marie-Stéphanie Janecek, a Foundation-supported artist, performed Antonin Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor to high acclaim with the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, Bloomington, Indiana, on 1 December, 2006. Ms Janecek, who received a standing ovation, is presently studying in Bloomington at Indiana University under the renowned cellist Janos Starker.
The conductor was the Foundation’s Artistic Director, Geoffrey Simon, who formed the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra in 1969. Maestro Simon’s continuing contact with the orchestra, including recently appearing with it as a guest conductor for its 35th anniversary concert, led to Ms Janecek’s performance, under the auspices of the Swiss Global Artistic Foundation.
